We've had a significant number of bear sightings in the past few weeks. At this time of the year, bears are on a constant search for food so they can fatten up for their winter hibernation. Therefore, it is especially important to make sure your yard is free of attractants. Once bears learn that your backyard provides an easy meal, it is difficult to prevent them from returning. Once a bear becomes a nuisance, it may need to be removed, relocated or destroyed. Fish and Wildlife reminds you to take the following actions:
Make sure your garbage, recycling and compost is secured - any outdoor garbage bin should be bear-resistant with a tight fitting or lockable lid. If not, store it the basement, a garage, or shed until you can take it to the dump or it gets picked up. Only put garbage bins out on the morning of pick up day, not the night before.
- Pick apples and other fruit and berries now and store indoors.
- Do not put bird seed in your bird feeders.
- Do not leave pet food outdoors.
