Big fish caught in Little Red

Sundre's Robert Jackson had a really good day of fishing in the fall of 1972, catching these two large fish, one weighing 14 pounds, 10 oz, and the other 12 pounds and eight oz. “A catch worth making,” said Jackson.

Sewage lagoon work underway

Construction of a new sewage lagoon and related piping was underway in Sundre in the fall of 1972. “Mr. Richardson (foreman) told us that if everything goes according to schedule, the system would be completed in six weeks. The obstacle to overcome before winter sets in is the lift station - once that is completed, the rest would be more or less routine. The new sewage line starts at the big bridge (over the Red Deer) and heads directly north, crossing the Bearberry diversion, and staying below the banks of the Red Deer River up to the former Lee Wells residence. The diggers are working in the water, which makes it fairly difficult and will further hamper laying the actual pipelines. The cost of this installation complete and ready for operation is $94,047.

Emergency exercise involved students

The “Vanguard” emergency preparedness exercise in town involved Sundre students, as well as hospital personnel from Sundre, Olds and Didsbury. “In this situation it was assumed that a school bus had collided with a train, and students were used as subjects for the exercise. Upon report of the accident, doctors were sent to the scene to assess injuries, and patients were tagged according to the nature of their injuries. Ambulances then transported the injured students to hospitals. Bandaging and casts were then applied where recommended. In fact a complete simulation of a major disaster was carried out.

Stupid behaviour for sure

In a letter to the editor, a local truck driver related an incident involving some very dangerous behaviour by a couple of local youths. “At the time of the recent snowstorm when returning to Sundre from the east with a trailer load of bales behind my truck, in front of the Feed Mill we were petrified by two little boys, aged about nine and ten, playing Dare on bikes in front of oncoming cars. These boys were darting back and forth across the road in front of cars coming from both directions. The road was icy and very slippery, and in no way could you stop instantly with a load pushing you. My husband sounded his horn at the boys, and they just waved and continued their darting. It was only by an act of God that these little fellows were saved.”

Swimmer forget their trunks and other stuff

The Sundre swimming pool put out a call for public help after all sorts of things were left in the lost and found box during the summer swimming season. “The boxes contain items such as towels, footwear, adult clothing, including a lady's wristwatch, and lots of other things. Anything not picked up in the next few weeks will be donated to the thrift store,” management said.

Service club needed in Sundre

The Round Up editorial called for the creation of a service club in town.

“There are several ladies auxiliaries in Sundre who are doing a tremendous amount of service work. Just to mention two of them, the hospital auxiliary and the legion auxiliary who are not receiving the publicity they deserve. At the same time we feel strongly on the subject of a men's service club, one that will be doing nothing but service work. Towns that have a service organization are having things done that we are missing out on. We have enough younger men around here who are vitally interested and would promote the betterment of Sundre. Why don't you younger types get together and form a service club. Kinsmen, Kiwanis, Lions, etc. Whatever it may be we need one in Sundre.”

In the stores

The Wrigley's Sundre Mayfair Foods store's monthly specials included chuck roast for 65 cents a pound, cross rib roast for 99 cents, bologna for 49 cents, ground beef for 69 cents, Mac apples for 49 cents for two pounds, tomatoes for 39 cents a pound, eight cans of Puritan soup for 98 cents, Cheese Whiz for $1.69, three pounds of margarine for 69 cents.

Modern equipment comes to Sundre

The Sundre Hospital announced the arrival of some state-of-the art medical equipment. “A very modern and effective new type of infant incubator was purchased last spring by the Sundre General Hospital. It is described as the most comprehensive line-controlled environment uniform temperature. This type of incubator is standard equipment in large hospitals, so we residents are fortunate to have one in our Sundre hospital. The purchase of this machine was made possible by the cooperation of Olds and Sundre hospitals in buying two machines at one time. This way, the original cost of $1,200 was reduced by over $300. The baby may be fed, changed, weighed and bathed inside the machine.”

Tax wisdom

The following humorous item appeared on P. 2: “Man to friend: ‘Personally I don't mind paying tax. It goes for a worthy cause - keeping me out of jail'.”

Grand opening a front-page story

In a front-page story, the Round Up reported on the opening of a new business in town. “Jack Lewis, local TV and appliance service man, has enlarged his operation and during last weekend held a very successful official opening. Lewis Enterprises has a good stock of TV sets, radios, small appliances, some white goods, and anything that you cannot find in stock, Jack says he can order and have delivery within a few days.”
