Quick thinking by the residents of a burning home near Sundre last Thursday averted further disaster, say fire officials.
The Sundre fire department was called to a structure fire on the James River Road just a few miles north of town last Thursday afternoon.
When firefighters arrived on scene, one room of the single family home showed moderate flames, said Rob McBride, the Sundre fire department ICO on the call.
The pumper with five members arrived on scene first. More fire department members followed and the RCMP was also on scene.
Three members were on the attack line and had the fire knocked down pretty quickly, he said.
“All told it was probably 10 to 15 minutes,” he said.
He credits the home's occupants with calling for help quickly. A mother and adult son were home at the time of the fire.
“If they wouldn't have reacted so quickly, it could have been a lot worse,” he said.
The fire was contained to the one back room of the house but heat and smoke damaged another room as well, he said.
The fire investigator did not confirm a cause of the blaze as of pres time Monday.
Once the interior fire was extinguished, crews overhauled the room and ventilated the home.
By press time Monday, no official confirmation was released.
