The Sundre Brownies raised more than $9,000 over the last month to support children with cancer.
At the Sundre United Church last Thursday, the Brownies participated in a ìShave your Lidî to bring an end to their month-long fundraising efforts, said co-organizer Dayle Raymond.
Three people had their locks lopped off, including Brownie leader Jenna Grant, Brooke ìthe Brownie dollî and truck driver Bradley Stair, she said.
The February fundraiser collected funds for the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta, she said.
The funds raised are being used to send kids to Camp Kindle in Water Valley.
ìThere are still a few last-minute donations rolling in, but at last count, the girls had raised a total of $9,315.40,î she said.
ìThose funds will cover camp costs to send 46-plus kids to camp.î
It is $200 to send each kid to camp, she said.
ìThe girls went out starting to raise money doing chores, collecting bottles, asking for pledges,î she explained.
The Sundre Brownies formed last fall, after taking a hiatus of at least eight to 10 years, she said.
There are five girls in the group, including Rayna Sommerfeld, Raegen Blatchford, Alexia Davis, Breanna Raymond and Dakota Knecht.
Every February, Girl Guides celebrate a ìthinking dayî to mark birthdays of the founders of Girl Guides, she said.
ìThe theme for thinking day this year was reducing childhood mortality, which is a bit of a thick theme for kids who are seven and eight years old,î she said.
The girls chose this fundraiser, she added.
ìWe are very proud of their accomplishment and would like to say a huge thank you to everyone in the community that supported this cause,î she said.
She gives credit to a team of supportive log drivers, spearheaded by Bradley Stair from Rick Martin Trucking and Joe Vonesch from R Bruce Erickson Construction.
ìThe girls were amazed to hear just how successful they had been through all of their hard work,î she said.
