The final lift of asphalt on Centre Street North from 6th A Avenue up to 12th Avenue is expected to be laid later this summer, said Sundre’s operations manager.

Sundre and surrounding area residents who commute along Centre Street North can expect to see a construction crew complete the project's first phase later this summer.

The municipality’s operations manager, Jim Hall, said last week that the initial layer of asphalt is generally given some time to settle to identify any potential defects before proceeding with the application of the final lift.

“This gives us a chance to make sure the product base that was put down is sturdy enough to maintain a solid final lift product,” said Hall.

Since the first lift was laid late during last year’s construction season just before the snow started to fall, the operations manager said the plan is to allow a period of time to see if any problems such as potholes arise.

“It’s on the contractor to make sure deficiencies are fixed and reckoned with before we put on the final lift,” he said, adding there is a warranty period following the project’s completion .

The work to complete the final lift is expected to start sometime in July, he said.

Meanwhile, the regional paved pathway on the east side of Centre Street North from 8th Avenue to 12th Avenue NE has been completed, while plans are in place to remove the adjacent sidewalk and reseed the ground to restore the grass, he said.

Additionally, a further stretch of the regional asphalt pathway will also replace the sidewalk running from 8th Avenue to 6th A Avenue NE. That will also mean having to remove some trees because of their proximity to the pathway, he said.

However, Hall added there are also plans to replace them with either shrubs or new trees.

The project's second phase, which essentially depends on future developments in Sundre's north, features plans to build a two-lane road in either direction with a boulevard running down the middle.
