Jackets are being made available for Sundre-area residents who may not be able to afford one this winter.
The ladies' Bible study group from McDougal Chapel have set up two coat racks outside of Sobeys. They are collecting jackets from people in the community to place on the racks for people to help themselves to.
As part of the second annual Coats for the Cold, the racks were put up about two weeks ago and there have been 75 jackets distributed so far. Last year, there were a total of 60 coats distributed, according to Shelley Kohut, a teacher with the group.
She has been advocating for people to donate more coats on Facebook and said people are also invited to donate mittens, scarves, hats and boots.
“We know of 75 coats that have gone out, but we don't know how many people have put out there. Because people are putting coats on the rack at the same time, not just us,” said Kohut.
The owner of the liquor store beside Sobeys has received several “wonderful” comments from people about the initiative, she added.
“As long as we have coats to put up and people taking them, we'll try and do it for about a month. But if I don't get more coats then I'll probably take it down,” she said.
“They're going just about as quick as I can put them up there. There is definitely more of a need this year.”
