Cold snap descends during Sundre WinterFest

Mountain Survivalist competition returns after being cancelled last year

SUNDRE — Four teams that participated in the second Mountain Survivalist competition this past weekend during WinterFest activities faced conditions that put their skills to the test.

Although milder conditions on Saturday enticed a greater number of people to come check out the ice sculptures at the Greenwood Campground, a farmers market set up at the Sundre Elks Lodge No. 338 by organizers of the Cowboy Trail Market, as well as free admission at the Sundre & District Museum, a plunge back to the deep freeze by Monday kept many people at bay.

Several hundred people reportedly came out for WinterFest activities, most of them on Saturday.

But the bitter cold did not prevent four teams from testing their mettle against Mother Nature on Monday, Feb. 21 during the second Mountain Survivalist competition.

Among the challenges contenders had to successfully complete were to process a pile of provided wood without an axe using only a knife, start a fire without a lighter or accelerants, boil an egg and steep some tea, as well as set up an emergency shelter.
