Cooking up connections in Sundre through the culinary arts

Sundre legion hosts Greenwood Neighbourhood Place initiative that offers opportunity to build bonds while learning new dishes

SUNDRE — A group of half a dozen people recently gathered at the Royal Canadian Legion Sundre Branch #223 to connect over a shared culinary experience called Cooking Up Connections.

The initiative, organized by the Greenwood Neighbourhood Place Society and funded through Sundre Family and Community Support Services, is an all ages multi-generational activity that offers interested individuals an opportunity to build bonds while adding new dishes to their repertoire.

The Aug. 17 session was fully booked, with the group preparing a meal inspired by Greek dishes, including Moussaka – a sort of green lasagna with layers of cheese traditionally made with egg plant but alternatively prepared using zucchini – as well as honey-infused Greek-style yogurt.

Among the cooks were brothers Declan Free, 12, and Jacob, 8, who came to Sundre from Calgary for a summertime visit with their grandmother Evelyn Free, who lives in the Bergen area.

While the next session scheduled for Sept. 14 is also already booked, Renate de Bruijn, the society's community outreach coordinator, said she hopes to offer two more in October and November, and encourages anyone who’s interested in participating to keep an eye out in GNP’s monthly newsletter.

Editor's note: This article has been updated to correct the branch number of Sundre's Royal Canadian Legion Sundre Branch #223.
