SUNDRE – Players who came to curl in the local club’s modified mixed bonspiel over the past weekend had fun enjoying the chance to socialize over some friendly competition.
“People seemed happy and having a good time getting out curling,” said Glen Smith, club member and event organizer.
“There was no complaints,” he said, adding things overall went really well and that enough teams registered for three events.
“We did have a little bit of trouble getting the last couple of teams to get our 16,” he said, adding the bonspiel would have proceeded regardless, just with a slightly different set up for the draw had the number of teams come up a bit short.
The majority of the teams were comprised of players from the Sundre and Olds area, with five rinks coming out from Cremona and the rest largely from throughout the larger region including Airdrie and Delburne, he said.
Don Brian’s rink from Cremona won the A event, with the Colby Brian rink – also from Cremona – winning the B event. The Kevin Humphrey rink from Sundre won the C event.
Smith extended gratitude on behalf of the club not only to all of the players who came out to support the event, but also the volunteers and sponsors who pitched in to make the bonspiel possible.
And despite the borderline spring weather conditions over the past weekend, plenty of curling yet remains ahead this season.
The women have their spiel coming up on Valentine’s weekend on Feb. 9-12 followed by by the Sundre Oilmen’s March 10-12 with the final open bonspiel on March 29 to April 2 marking the official end.
“There’s still a bit of curling going to happen yet,” he said.
