A community initiative being spearheaded by longtime resident Lourelle Vooys will see donated lights placed on the community Christmas tree on Nov. 30 to remind residents of the need to live up to the spirit of the season.

The tree will be located in the parking lot north of Sobeys on Main Avenue.

Vooys says various church groups, business owners and others are being encouraged to take part in what she is calling the “Faith, Hope and Love” initiative.

Tables will be set up at the site starting at 10 a.m. on Nov. 30th where people can come by and donate strings of lights and then help put them up.

“We want donated lights from anybody in the community,” she said. “We want mixed colours. Love is red and white, Hope is blue and purple, and Faith is green and gold.

“We want to recognize the people who are hurting in Sundre. We want to join people together because there is no ‘I' in team. We are seeing all kinds of trouble in the community such as grieving.”

Vooys' original plan was to have a light display on the east side of the Red Deer River Bridge, but that has now been changed to involve the community Christmas tree, which is being donated by Sundre Forest Products, town council heard last week.

The official lighting up of the Christmas tree will take place on Dec. 2 during the Sundown in Sundre shopping extravaganza.
