Emergency crews responded on Wednesday, Sept. 5 to a fatal single-vehicle rollover south of Sundre on Highway 760 just east of the intersection with Twp. Rd. 320 near the former Bergen Store.

The Sundre Fire Department, whose volunteers performed an extrication to remove the vehicle’s lone occupant, received the call at about 2:30 p.m., said Chief Marty Butts.

After veering off the road and rolling over, the silver-grey Suzuki XL-7 SUV came to a rest on its side on the south side of the road barely a few metres from an occupied rural residence. However, although startled, no one at the home was harmed.

A STARS air ambulance was dispatched for an airlift, while a ground ambulance crew also attended the scene along with two RCMP officers from the Sundre and Didsbury detachments. The female driver, in her 60s, succumbed from the injuries sustained at the scene.

"We got her out but she went downhill after in the ambulance waiting for STARS," Butts told the Round Up, adding firefighters did an "awesome job" on a "hard extrication" but that the outcome was out of their hands.

By about 4:30 p.m., the scene was largely cleared with a tow truck on its way to remove the wreckage while police continued to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
