The school year at Sundre High School began with a bang this September as returning students swamped the front doors with excitement, while timid new pupils from River Valley and other places inched shyly into the school through a throng of rambunctious giants.
Fresh Grade 9 faces have lit up the halls of our school, as well as many other new students from uncharted parts of the globe—ranging from Japan to South Carolina to New Brunswick to England. Yes, the cultural smorgasbord at Sundre High has just added about 20 new additions to the scholarly menu.
Within a few weeks, the Students' Union election rolled around to bring the year into full swing. The new members have done a fantastic job so far at representing the student body and setting up fun activities like tug-of-war and pumpkin carving.
In mid-October, students donned some creepy, creative and downright crazy costumes for the Halloween Dance.
Sundre High is excited to announce the unveiling of a new organization called the Leadership Club. All students are welcome to participate to make a positive difference at Sundre High, the Sundre community and the world. Stay tuned for updates on various projects.
As always, Sundre High continues to show off its talent and skill in the area of sport. The girls and boys golf teams had a good showing at Zones, with Sandra Block and Brendan Larsen making Provincials in Fort McMurray.
Orange hoodies were worn by many during the Terry Fox Run this year in support of a former student, Cindy Perry, and her fight to triumph against leukemia.
The cross-country team stayed competitive as always and sent 15 athletes to Provincials, where Sundre achieved a close second place overall. Our volleyball teams are currently wrapping up their seasons and preparing for Zones. Basketball season is almost upon us and students are already practising in preparation.
Among all of these fantastic activities happening at our school, the central theme of academics took to the stage in September at Academic Awards Night. Sundre High was proud to reward its students for their hard work. It certainly paid off for a certain phenomenal student named Hailey Musselman, who achieved a 98.6 per cent overall average, was our Governor General's bronze medal winner for academic excellence, and received the University of Alberta's President's Citation Award, making her one of the top students in the country. She certainly set the bar high for all students to strive for.
This month, our school held its annual Remembrance Day ceremony to commemorate those who have fought to maintain our freedom. We are forever grateful for their sacrifice. Keep your ears and eyes open for other goings-on at Sundre High School. We're confident we've begun the year right and we will continue to strive for excellence until June 30.
