Nicky Vardas, an organizer of the Play 4 Sundre Kidz golf charity, which raises funds to facilitate access to sports for local youth who might otherwise not be able to afford to play, sought council’s support for the upcoming second annual event.

An organizer of the second annual Play 4 Sundre Kidz charity golf tournament sought council’s support for the event, which raises funds to help local youth get involved in a variety of sports they might otherwise not be able to afford to join.

“We’re looking for teams or donations from the town,” said Nicky Vardas during the May 28 meeting.

“We made $12,000 last year,” she said, adding a board was established to consider applications.

Coun. Rob Wolfe asked how much the former council had committed to providing for last year’ inaugural event, which was held at the Coyote Creek Golf and RV Resort.

“You put in a team,” answered Vardas.

“We have the whole golf course to ourselves this year, so we’re looking for 144 golfers.”

Coun. Paul Isaac said he likes that the organization raises funds that stay in the community to help local youths.

“I think it’s worthwhile,” he said.

Wolfe motioned to provide the same amount as was offered last year, either by way of again registering a team or by providing an equivalent donation of $500.

Coun. Cheri Funke, who sits on the board for the organization, had recused herself from the discussion to avoid the perception of bias on the vote and council proceeded to otherwise unanimously carry Wolfe’s motion
