Housing committee will look at seniors' needs

The Town of Sundre is looking for residents to come forward to sit on a new committee looking at long-term seniors housing needs in town.

Addressing the future seniors housing needs in Sundre is vital to the whole community and something the committee will help accomplish, said Mayor Annette Clews.

ìIt's very important work,î said Clews. ìWe know we have a huge shortfall in seniors housing in Sundre. We need to ensure that we are going to address the housing needs properly, whether it's more lodges or low-income rentals or long-term care. We need people to come forward and help us on this committee.î

The seniors advisory committee was actually formed late last year as a subcommittee of Mountain View Seniors' Housing.

The Sundre committee currently has three elected officials, including Mayor Clews, as well as the CAO of Mountain View Seniors' Housing and three public members.

Officials are now looking for two or three additional members, either seniors or family members of seniors, she said.

ìWe want to have a good base of representation from the residents,î she said. ìWe will be working with Mountain View Seniors' Housing and sharing information. We want to get a business case together so that when we apply for grants, we have everything in place.

ìThis advisory committee has been set up to specifically address seniors housing needs in Sundre. We need information to be put together before we move forward with applications (to the province) about what kind of facilities we are after.î

Once the new committee members are in place, the committee will be sending out a public survey to garner public input and suggestions.

ìOnce we get that survey feedback then we can formulate our business plan,î she said.

Anyone interested in sitting on the advisory committee is asked to submit his or her name to the town by letter of interest by Jan. 25.
