Patrols in the West Country are increasing for the May long weekend.
“With the increased number of officers on patrol there will also be other enforcement partners including officers from Mountain View County, Clearwater County, the Town of Sundre and Alberta Fish and Wildlife,” said Cpl. Ryan Hodge, Sundre RCMP.
“The officers will be working together to ensure a safe weekend and also to provide an increased law enforcement presence,” he said.
May long weekend, which falls on May 18, 19 and 20 this year, is generally the “kickoff to summer”, with an increase in the number of people venturing into the West Country. There is an increase of enforcement every year during this time.
“There will be specific focus on impaired driving offences, not only of motor vehicles but also of off-highway motor vehicles,” he said.
“Anyone driving an off-highway motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol will face the same penalties as a driver in any other vehicle,” he added.
“Police will also be enforcing the Gaming and Liquor Act, which includes underage possession and consumption of liquor, illegal transportation of liquor and related offences.”
Sundre RCMP officers are also encouraging users of the West Country to follow safety rules as follows:
• Be knowledgeable of one's location in the case of an emergency so one is able to provide directions. Watch for landmarks to describe the location and let family and friends know the plan.
• Bring proper first aid supplies and be prepared for a variety of weather patterns.
• Do not consume alcohol or drugs and then operate any motor vehicle.
• Be aware that emergency services may be several hours away.
“Do not travel off on your own, whether riding an ATV, hiking, or driving in the backcountry. It is recommended to have someone with you,” said Hodge.
“If you find yourself lost or separated from your group, stay where you are and wait for someone to find you.”
Members of the public are encouraged to report any illegal activity they may witness at any time during this weekend.
