Although police nabbed a few impaired motorists during the Labour Day long weekend, there were otherwise no serious incidents.
“The Sundre RCMP detachment brought in additional resources for the Labour Day weekend to assist the Sundre complement with policing the detachment area,” Cpl. Joe Mandel wrote in an email release.
“With the weather cooperating, our office saw a significant increase of visitors to the Sundre area with more than average users out west taking advantage of the open camping. Members were out in full force conducting check stops and enforcing traffic laws.”
That effort resulted in police officers initiating four impaired driving investigations, he said, adding numerous violation and warning tickets were also issued.
“The weekend was steady with approximately 30 calls for service and proactive policing initiatives,” he said.
“But there were no major issues or developments. It was a safe and enjoyable weekend for all and an excellent way to close up the summer.”
The corporal also reminds commuters that school is back in session and to be cognizant of their speed when travelling through school zones and around school buses.
“It takes only a moment of inattention to change the lives of many, including yours, so please be mindful. The police also want to remind parents to educate and demonstrate to your little ones on the use of marked crosswalks when crossing the street,” he said.
“Remember that children are like mirrors and they reflect what they see. So if you are not using the crosswalk, then they won’t.”
Marty Butts, Sundre’s fire chief, said his department fielded only two calls over the long weekend, both medical assists that were not very serious.
“It was a good, safe long weekend for our area,” he said.
Additionally, he said fire conditions around the Sundre area are looking great heading into the fall, with no active fire bans or advisories in effect.
“They all have been lifted.”
