Council awarded a construction contract during a special meeting last week, for not only the repaving of a portion of Main Avenue but also upgrades to underground infrastructure.

Work on the section of the street stretching to 7th Street SW from 10th Street SW, was expected to — weather permitting of course — begin following the Labour Day long weekend, said Linda Nelson, chief administrative officer, during an interview.

The motion carried during the Aug. 28 meeting was to accept a tender in the amount of about $2.68 million including GST as well as a 10 per cent contingency, she said.

A second motion to direct administration to transfer the required funds from several reserves was also carried. Debenture borrowing will amount to about $1.5 million, with MSI grant funding covering a roughly $650,000 portion of the project’s cost. The roads reserves will contribute $220,000, with an additional $100,000 coming from the water reserve as well as another $100,000 from the wastewater reserve, she said.

Above and beyond repaving the road, the project also involves replacing and upgrading underground infrastructure, laying asphalt for the regional walking path, as well as installing a new underground water loop that will connect a line to 6th Street SW from 1st Street NW, she said, adding the latter will help relieve pressure issues in the industrial park as well as facilitate future developments.

The contractor that was awarded the job is a company called UG Excavating Ltd., she said. According to the firm’s website, the company is based in Calgary.

Provided there are no unexpected delays caused by, for example, weather, the work should be done before the end of October, she said.
