Sundre RCMP officers are calling what is known as the annual “kickoff to summer” a quiet event.
May long weekend fell on May 17 - 19 this year and it wasn't as busy as expected, which Sundre RCMP constable Mike Martin believes was a result of the rainy weather.
“It was a little quieter than last year but I think the weather probably put a damper on a lot of stuff,” said Martin.
Officers noticed people heading home as early as Sunday morning, after the weather turned bad Saturday evening.
He said officers witnessed “typical” May long weekend crimes, such as violations of the Traffic Safety Act and the Off Highway Vehicle Act.
“We definitely gave out some tickets under the provincial legislation that way, and as well as the Gaming and Liquor Act -- some open alcohol, that sort of thing,” he said.
“Other than that, there were some people shooting off fireworks, and just some misbehaved people. But all in all I'd definitely call it a pretty good weekend – nothing I'd call a major incident, no major injuries or anything like that.”
Patrols increased in the West Country for May long weekend, including officers from Mountain View County, Clearwater County, the Town of Sundre and Alberta Fish and Wildlife.
Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development officials spread positive messages through Sasquatch branded soaker bags over the weekend.
The messages were about respecting the land, reporting poachers and preventing wildfires. The bags were provided to people en route to the West Country, through checkstops.
