A collision involving four vehicles north of Sundre on Highway 22 sent three people to hospital on Christmas Eve.
Police say a vehicle hit the ditch after the driver lost control, and another driver pulled over to assist them. Meanwhile, the operator of a vehicle passing by rear-ended another vehicle that was passing by. The driver then hit the vehicle that was pulled over on the side of the road.
ìThe investigation revealed that a Jeep SUV had been southbound on Highway 22 and lost control, coming to a stop in a snowbank,î reported Sundre RCMP Const. Mike Martin.
ìThe driver of a Dodge truck then stopped at the scene to render assistance to the driver of the Jeep.
ìMoments later, a Ford van travelling southbound passed the scene, struck the rear of a Ford truck that was also southbound, passing the initial scene.î
The Ford truck veered off the road and into the ditch, while the Ford van continued off the road, striking the parked Dodge truck head on.
A passenger of the Dodge truck, a 37-year-old Cochrane woman, as well as the driver of the Ford van, a 60-year-old Rimbey woman, and a passenger of the Ford van, a 63-year-old Rimbey man, were taken to the Sundre hospital.
The man was then transported to a Calgary hospital in a STARS helicopter and treated for serious injuries.
Several others were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The accident occurred at the intersection of Highway 22 and Twp. Rd. 333 at approximately 1:20 p.m. on Dec. 24. Members of the Sundre RCMP, Sundre Fire Department, and Emergency Medical Service personnel attended the scene.
ìThe investigation into this collision is continuing, however, charges under the Alberta Traffic Safety Act are anticipated.î
