Cuts to provincial grants this year mean the Sundre museum is losing out on roughly $11,802.97.
The funding, which the museum has traditionally applied and been approved for, comes from two separate grants: the Community Spirit grant and the Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP) grant. Both programs have been terminated.
“The Sundre museum is part of a lobby to have the decisions revisited, or and then, hopefully, to see reversed or new programs developed to replace these two important grants,” said Jack Nichol, president of the Sundre & District Historical Society, in a letter to council.
“The museum board of directors needs the help and support of other individuals and organizations.”
The STEP grant has been in place for 40 years under the Ministry of Human Services and the average grant received by the museum has been about $2,100.
The Community Spirit grant program began about five years ago under the Ministry of Culture and the museum received $9,702.97 for the year of 2012-2013.
During the Oct. 8 council meeting, council passed a motion for town administration staff to write a letter to the ministries of Municipal Affairs, Community Services and Culture, addressing concerns of the removal of the two grants.
