Sundre's own 24-year-old Corey Norman is being recognized for his talent after singing and writing country songs for nearly eight years.
He is a proud winner of the 2014 96.5 CKFM Star Search competition held earlier this month.
As part of winning the competition, he will have the opportunity to record one of his original songs in a studio in Calgary and it will be aired on the radio.
It is an annual competition for up-and-coming country singers and songwriters. He participated in the competition last year as well and made it to the finals, but didn't take first place.
“I've always sung since I was just a little kid. I was always singing to the radio,” said Norman, adding he has been playing guitar for about two years.
The competition included a qualifying night in Olds, where he sang two songs. He then went on to the finals in Didsbury, where he played three original songs.
He is currently attending his second year of school at Red Deer College for welding.
Other hobbies of his include hunting and fishing. He also won a karaoke contest in 2012.
Winning the star search competition felt “pretty unbelievable”, he said.
“I didn't think I was going to win. It's still kind of hard to believe,” he said.
“Hopefully one day I can do it as a living, make a living out of it and just write songs and let people hear them.”
