Sundre RCMP officers will be conducting checkstops in Sundre and the surrounding area on New Year's Eve with a goal to crack down on impaired driving.
“The message really just is, if you're going to drink, plan an alternate way home,” said Sundre RCMP Sgt. Jim Lank, adding there will be checkstops set up throughout the weekend as well.
“We just encourage everybody to be safe and be responsible.”
He said it's important to conduct checkstops during the holiday season because there are generally more social events happening, which can involve alcohol.
“There typically just tends to be more drinking and socializing taking place over especially I think the Christmas and New Year holidays so there's a need to try and prevent and deter the drinking drivers being out there on the roads because they present a significant safety risk to themselves and others,” he said.
Sundre RCMP officers also conducted a checkstop on Dec. 5 in the Bearberry area as part of a provincewide checkstop blitz.
“We never issued any charges, but we did issue a couple of roadside suspensions due to alcohol and seized a couple of vehicles.”
