Rental fee waived for April 27 job fair in Sundre

Inaugural event introduced in 2022 for Sundre and area students will now also feature an all-ages community component

SUNDRE – The municipal council has approved a request to waive the Sundre Community Centre’s rental fee for a job fair at the end of the month.

Council heard during the regular April 11 meeting that the request was brought forward by a partnership comprised of The Den – Sundre Youth Centre, Sundre High School, the Sundre & District Chamber of Commerce and the Greenwood Neighbourhood Place Society.

“They’re requesting a waiver of the fees for the rental of the community centre to host a job fair,” said Linda Nelson, chief administrative officer.

“Typically, in-kind funding applications would go through the grant review committee process,” said Nelson.

“However, the timing for this was a little bit off, and council does have the discretionary grants that they can give out annually,” she said, adding that budget item has $2,500.

“So far, council has not used any of those funds at all,” she said, adding the rental fee would amount to $169.25 and that administration recommended approving the request.

Coun. Paul Isaac moved to approve the request.

Speaking in support of the motion, Coun. Owen Petersen said, “I just really like this event; they’re asking for a tiny, tiny amount, and it’s a bunch of organizations in town getting together for job creation. I hope they do it every single year, forever.”

Coun. Connie Anderson said last year’s inaugural fair was a “big success.”

“It’s well received in the community; I think it’s a great idea,” said Anderson.

Support from council was unanimous and the motion carried.

The community job fair takes place Thursday, April 27 with the first portion from 3 to 5 p.m. being geared towards students and recent grads while the period from 5 to 6 p.m. is open to job seekers of all ages.
