Residents will go to the polls for a Nov. 21 byelection

Town council has set a Nov. 21 byelection to replace departing first-term councillor Michael Baird.

Council made the decision at its regular meeting on Oct. 1.

Its decision comes just a year before the next full municipal election but council felt it was the best option for the town as it reduces the risk of not having a quorum.

Baird announced to council earlier this year he was stepping down to fully commit his time to advance his post-secondary education in Calgary.

The main polling station will be set up at the Town of Sundre Council Chambers from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will also be a mobile institutional polling station from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. that will accommodate senior citizens at the Foothills Lodge, Wildrose Court, Hagen Manor, Pioneer Place and the Sundre Hospital and Care Centre.

Meanwhile, the estimated cost of the byelection is expected to be around $3,000. This includes $1,500 for fees and wages for election workers, $980 for the deputy returning officer and additional costs for the voting station, advance voting and ballot counting.

Nominations are now open to anyone in the community who wants to run in the byelection. The deadline to submit names is Oct. 24.
