River Valley School (RVS) students collected non-perishable food items while out trick-or-treating on Friday evening, as part of the third annual “We Scare Hunger” campaign.
The Me to We club at RVS partnered with Free the Children to run the campaign, and students collected the food for Santa's Anonymous.
“Essentially we set the kids up. We've talked a little bit about hunger, local hunger and some of the issues around that and how this is one small thing we can do to help,” said RVS teacher Tanya Braybrook who organized the event.
There are many ways the campaign benefits the students involved, she added.
“It really helps them to understand a simple way that they can make a difference in their community. By collecting cans of soup or packages of pasta, they can help to scare hunger out of Sundre,” she said.
Students will be dropping their donations off at the school over the next week, and Braybrook is hoping to collect more than 1,000 pounds of food.
Last year the students collected 1,025 pounds of food, and the first year they collected 886 pounds.
“I'm really proud of the kids for wanting to be part of this initiative and being a positive role model in our community and helping out.”
