Sundre residents are encouraged to be Snow Angels this winter and shovel their neighbours' sidewalks.
Greenwood Neighbourhood Place (GNP) officials have introduced a Snow Angel program to the community as a result of the excessive amount of snow that fell in Sundre last winter.
“After the huge downfall of snow last year, we at Greenwood Neighbourhood Place thought it would be a good idea to just encourage people to shovel the snow of their neighbours when they see that they're having a hard time getting to it,” said Kim Free, outreach coordinator for GNP.
She wanted to introduce the program to Sundre after seeing it in Calgary and says signs will be set up through town similar to the ones in the city.
She believes it is an important program to have in Sundre, especially with the senior population in town.
“I've heard that oftentimes with heavy snowfalls, the senior population, some of them go out to shovel the sidewalk and they haven't done that for quite a while, and they can have health complications like heart attacks and things because they are not used to that amount of physical activity,” she said.
People are encouraged to contact GNP officials and nominate Snow Angels throughout the winter. Snow Angels may receive treats for their service, she added.
Greenwood Neighbourhood Place has entered a partnership with the Town of Sundre to launch the program.
Free said as part of the partnership, town officials are helping spread awareness of the program and will sponsor treats for Snow Angels.
The program is also in Innisfail and Carstairs.
