SUNDRE – Authorities are asking the public for help identifying a darker-coloured Dodge after a property owner’s camera captured video footage of the passenger firing a gun from the window as the vehicle sat parked along a range road west of town.

In a joint press statement issued early today on Dec. 12, Sundre Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services and the Sundre RCMP department said video taken on Nov. 13 along the Williams Creek Road just west of Sundre had been received.

“At around 11:18 a.m., the passenger in a darker-coloured Dodge extended cab was observed discharging a firearm from the cab,” the statement reads in part.

“It is unlawful to discharge a weapon from a vehicle.”

As per the Alberta Wildlife Act, a violation of firing a weapon from a vehicle has a minimum penalty of $180, but could increase to $1,000 as well as loss of hunting privilege should a mandatory court appearance be issued.

Pending full investigation of the incident, authorities also said the offence could also be considered a Criminal Code violation for the careless use of a firearm, a charge that can include a fine worth upward of $2,000 or depending on the gravity of the situation imprisonment for up to 10 years.

Anyone with information about the truck or the incident is encouraged to call the Report A Poacher line at 1-800-642-3800 or the local RCMP department at 403-638-3655. Callers who would rather remain anonymous may either contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), submit information online at www.P3Tips.com or alternatively by using the P3 Tips app available through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
