SUNDRE – The municipal council recently took a moment to pay its respects to a late, former colleague.

“Tonight, I would like to ask us all to hold our silence in remembrance of Charlene Preston, who has passed away and was a member of our last council,” mayor Richard Warnock said on Nov. 28 during a regular council meeting.

“So, in honour of Charlene and her service to the Town of Sundre, a moment of reflection, please and thank you.”

Members of council, all of whom were present, as well as administrative staff and two people in the gallery observed a minute of silence before getting back to the business at hand.

Preston, originally from Hanna, is a well-known figure within the 4-H community, and studied at Olds College.

She was in 2017 elected to her first term on Sundre council and served most of her four years before submitting her resignation in 2021 to pursue an opportunity at the Youngstown Greenhouse School of Excellence.

She had a passion for horticulture, along the way earning a bachelor’s degree in the discipline, and had also for many years been involved in the annual Kidney March.

Preston died on Nov. 14, and a celebration of her life was planned on Nov. 28 at the Hanna Hockey Arena.
