The Sundre Farmer’s Market will feature some new elements on just about a weekly basis, an organizer said.

“Some neat things are coming onboard,” said Karen Campbell, adding plans are to include something unique as often as possible.

“We’re trying to make it more of a community event along with the market.”

For example, when the market started on May 18 at the Sundre Curling Club, there were balloons for children as well as Sundre Farmer’s Market tote bags for parents and adults.

“The first week I thought was really excellent, there was lots of activity.”

Organizers want to continue to offer a variety of special features such as giveaways and draws, especially for children. Plans also include setting up a social area with refreshment such as coffee to offer people a chance to chat and catch up, she said.

Only a few weeks into this year’s season, the market has so far been going well, she said.

“We’re ready for a good year.”

There are some new vendors as well as some popular staples that tend to draw out crowds and there is an good variety of products for people to choose from as they peruse the tables, she said.

The only options that are not yet abundantly available are vegetables and fruits but that time will come as the growing season progresses, she added.

“It’s pretty early yet for vegetables.”

The weekly market’s attendance really starts to pick up once fresh produce begins to appear, she said, adding that the crowd generally gets even bigger during the summer when school is out and more people are coming through town to spend some time in the West Country for the weekend.

The market takes place every Friday evening at the Sundre Curling Club until the fall.

Additionally, Campbell said organizers are also planning to set up the market at the rodeo grounds in conjunction with the annual Sundre Pro Rodeo, which takes place June 22-24.

“We’d like to try it for one year.”
