SUNDRE – Students at the local high school recently rolled up their sleeves and got to work tackling odd jobs in and around the community.
The annual May Queen fundraiser, which over the years has annually raised tens of thousands of dollars, not only generates proceeds in support of Sundre High School Students’ Union projects and activities in the coming year, but also offers students an opportunity to gain collaborative work experience while developing their early resumes.
Funds raised are allocated towards initiatives and events such as scholarships, extra-curricular activities, graduation, awards night, yearbook, student trips, and community projects.
"Although we have raised in excess of $35,000 in past years, May Queen is more than just a fundraiser. It is a school community activity that promotes cooperation and collaboration among students; empowers students to take leadership roles; provides valuable lessons in the areas of community, persistence, initiative, and responsibility; (and) brings students, parents, staff, and community together," reads part of a background statement about the program on the school's website.
Work began on Wednesday, May 10 and wrapped up on Saturday, May 13, with this year's celebratory May Queen dance scheduled for Thursday, May 18.
