Sundre's two atom hockey teams – Huskies A and B squads - were successful during the Sundre Minor Hockey Atom Tournament last weekend.
The atom A team came first in its division and the atom B team took second place in its division.
“The tournament went really well,” said Stacey Johnson, manager of the atom A team.
She said there were seven teams involved and the players were of ages nine and 10.
Aside from the two Sundre teams, there were participating teams from Blackfalds, Red Deer, Didsbury, Airdrie and Strathmore.
Johnson said the Sundre Minor Hockey Atom Tournament is an annual event that is gaining popularity.
“It's different every year – every year it's a new group of kids,” said Johnson.
Tara Tooth, Sundre Minor Hockey Association secretary and ice allocator, said having tournaments in Sundre benefits players because they are able to show off their arena and their community.
“It brings in numerous families from around Alberta into our community,” said Tooth.
Sundre businesses benefit from home hockey tournaments because of the high number of families coming into the community, dining and staying in hotels.
She said at hockey tournaments there are raffles and 50/50 draws and the kids are rewarded for who “plays the hardest”.
“The kids love to host a tournament like this…they love having everyone in their arena,” said Tooth.
She said it provides the players with a “real team spirit” within the whole of Sundre Minor Hockey.
“It's a way for both atom teams to get together and all work together to provide a great weekend for all of Sundre Minor Hockey atom kids.”
