SUNDRE – A local non-profit community service organization that every year strives to alleviate holiday stress by providing food hampers over the Christmas season for those in need reports that the amount of contributions in 2023 is trending downward.
“It may not be surprising, given the economic climate, but food donations to Sundre Santas is way down,” said Donny Krahn, executive director of the Greenwood Neighbourhood Place Society.
And beyond the decline in food donations this year, Krahn added the society is also low on lightly used gift items for the Magic of Christmas event that offers children in the community an opportunity to find purchase gifts for their family at a minimal cost.
“We are also in need of donations for our Magic of Christmas event,” she said.
“We ask for new or gently used gift items for all members of the family.”
Although the deadline to offer contributions is technically this Thursday, Dec. 7, Krahn said that anyone who is inclined to make a donation is still welcome to do so by dropping off items in person at Santas Workshop, which is located in the former Big Rack Rentals building on the east side of town at 1101 Main Avenue East, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. this Friday, Dec. 8 as well as on Monday, Dec. 11.
Provided enough donations are received, the Magic of Christmas sale is scheduled for Dec. 16 at the Sundre Community Centre.
