Two Sundre players are part of the 2011-2012 Western Hockey League season, which started last week.
Through the years, several players from Central Alberta have laced up their skates to play in the premiere major junior hockey league in Canada.
Although several area players were invited to training camps of the various teams, four players were listed on team rosters at the start of the 2011-2012 WHL season. These included Sundre's Austin Fyten and Adam Beukeboom.
Fyten is a WHL veteran, while Beukeboom is playing his first WHL season.
Fyten has spent the last three seasons with the Lethbridge Hurricanes. A work-horse, he is closing in on playing his 200th game with the windy city.
During his time on the WHL roster, he has been a sniper as well as a playmaker. Appearing in 193 games, Fyten has blinked the red light 55 times while adding 67 assists for a commendable 122 points.
A goaltender, Beukeboom was able to see considerable pre-season play to impress the coaching staff of the Regina Pats, making the roaster as a result.
Over the years, the WHL has had a strong mentoring program for the rookie players as the member team's coaching staff as well as the veteran players will often work with the first year players giving out advice on the league's directive in developing players and offering them valuable information on continuing furthering their education as students with Canadian and American colleges offering a strong educational program along with a commendable sports program.
