SUNDRE — Local Mounties are turning to the public for help in a couple of incidents involving theft and attempted theft.
In the matter of a stolen generator, police reported in a press release issued Feb. 16 that an individual had on Tuesday, Feb. 8 been working in an enclosed cap on the back of his truck with a generator running outside to supply power when he noticed the generator suddenly stopped running.
“When he exited the cap of the truck, he saw a male walking away with the generator,” said police, adding the suspect loaded the red Honda 2000-watt generator into a vehicle and drove off.
Described as a young male, the suspect reportedly was seen driving away in a small, light brown four-dour SUV with a rack on the back that had two bikes on it.
With regards to a report of a suspicious person, a male was reportedly observed at about 1 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 17 trying to get into a vehicle that was parked at the NAPA parking lot in town, the Sundre RCMP department said in a press statement issued later the same day.
“The male was unsuccessful and departed northbound from the location,” said police, adding officers attended the scene and patrolled the surrounding area but were unable to locate the suspect.
“It is believed the suspect was trying to either steal the vehicle or was trying to steal something from within the vehicle.”
The male was reportedly wearing a dark shirt, grey sweatpants and a backpack.
“This is the second event in two days where someone has targeted a business late at night in Sundre,” said police, urging people to be aware of their surroundings and to promptly report any suspicious activity but also to refrain from following or confronting anyone suspected of committing a crime.
“Never approach or pursue persons believed to be involved in criminal activity,” said police.
Asked whether the incidents were unrelated or if there was a possible connection, Sgt. Trent Sperlie said, "I couldn't say for sure. I think it's safe to say someone or some people are active in trying to commit theft in the town of Sundre the last few days."
