Five members of the Silver Spurs 4-H Club made their mark at the 17th annual 4-H rodeo held at the Calgary Stampede Grounds on August 23 and 24.
Desirae Jackson, also known as Miss Rodeo Sundre 2014, placed first in intermediate thread the needle, second in intermediate breakaway roping, second in intermediate goat tying, 14th in intermediate barrels, and 15th in intermediate poles.
Meanwhile, Saige Jackson placed first in junior barrels and seventh in junior poles. Kayla Mitchell Chadwik placed ninth in junior thread the needle, 16th in junior poles, and 23rd in junior barrels.
Deshann Valentine placed sixth in junior poles, seventh in junior thread the needle, and 14th in junior barrels. Breanna Macklin placed sixth in intermediate barrels and 27th in intermediate poles.
Rodeo events included timed rounds of thread the needle, pole bending, barrel racing, breakaway roping, cow riding, goat tying and steer daubing.
Each discipline was divided into three age groups, including senior (15-20), intermediate (12-14) and junior (nine-11).
Clinics were also set up at the event where participants received instruction on various aspects of animal care and sports medicine.
There were 66 people from 32 different 4-H clubs – from as far north as the Peace Country to as far south as the Montana border – who participated in the rodeo.
The event was held at the Agrium Western Event Centre on the Stampede grounds. In 2012 and 2013 it was held at Olds College while facilities at the Stampede were undergoing renovations.
