SUNDRE — A 17-year-old passenger died when the driver of a truck they were travelling in lost control and the vehicle rolled over.

Members of the Sundre RCMP detachment responded on Saturday, July 17 to the fatal collision after receiving an SOS signal at about 12:46 p.m. from a GPS device on Highway 734 in the Municipal District of Bighorn, police said in a press release issued today (July 21).

Also joining the emergency response were members of the Cremona Fire Department as well as emergency medical services EMS.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that a pickup truck was travelling southbound on Highway 734 navigating a winding downhill section of roadway when it lost control, struck an embankment and rolled,” reads a portion of the police statement.

The 17-year-old was declared deceased at the scene, while both the 18-year-old driver as well as an 18-year-old passenger were transported by ground ambulance to a local area hospital.

“They were released shortly after,” said police.

Neither alcohol, drugs nor excessive speeds were believed to have been factors in the crash.

RCMP will not be releasing the deceased’s name and police said no further updates are expected.
