Another milestone will soon be reached in Sundre, as Tim Hortons is opening its first franchise in town and will be serving residents coffee in upcoming months.

“There is no set opening date right now. It's under construction but we have no idea on a set opening date yet,” said Quinn Jacobs, co-owner of the franchise's ownership group from Olds and Innisfail.

The construction began last month and will take roughly three months said Ron Baker, the town's director of operations. He said the building is being built for a room capacity of 30 people.

The new franchise is located on Main Avenue, in the west part of town, on the corner of Highway 27 and 10 Street SW.

“It will be built with a double lane drive-thru. All new restaurants now are built with the double drive-thru, which makes a huge difference,” said Jacobs.

“We're really looking forward to being out in Sundre. We've been waiting to get out there for quite a while. It's a very nice area to operate in,” he said.

Mae Bateman, resident of Sundre, said she has concerns with the Tim Hortons coming to town.

“The concern I have is what is it going to do to the other shops. Should it have been allowed to come to town when we have other coffee shops, one of which is already closed because business was slow?” said Bateman.

Const. Abram Letkeman, Sundre RCMP, said he thinks Tim Hortons will make a nice addition to Sundre.

“I would welcome any new business to Sundre. I think it will benefit all the residents of Sundre to have a good variety of every kind of business,” said Letkeman.

Sundre councillor Myron Thompson said he is glad that Tim Hortons is coming to town.

“It's something that people look forward to when they get on the road travelling and we have a lot of travellers through town and they always look for a Tim Hortons,” said Thompson.

“My wife and I, when we go travelling, this car won't hardly go past a Tim Hortons without pulling in,” he said.
