The provincial government is covering $659,000 worth of repairs to municipal infrastructure in Sundre damaged in the June 2013 floods as well as costs the Town of Sundre incurred responding to the disaster.
The funding will reimburse $175,000 for emergency operations costs, $250,000 for repairing damage to Greenwood Campground, and wastewater and water treatment plant repairs at $80,000.
Funding has also been allotted for repair of the rock spurs in the Red Deer River south of the bridge in the amount of $70,000 and $84,000 for 10th Street erosion repairs, recreation trail erosion and storm sewer cleaning.
Efforts are ongoing to complete the projects, Mayor Terry Leslie said.
“The Town of Sundre and Mountain View County councils are working together to present solutions for longer term river mitigation strategies that will protect residents, property and water quality to local and downstream residents and river users,” said Leslie.
“Not all projects will be completed by June 2014.”
Since the 2013 flood, engineers have been studying the river, the effects of the flood, changes in the river basin and potential predictable impacts in another high water event, he said.
On June 21, 2013, the Red Deer River breached its banks causing overland flooding in town. All east-side residents were evacuated.
Officials estimated last fall they would be claiming $451,000 from the provincial government to cover the damage.
The majority of the cost was to cover damage that was caused to Greenwood Campground, as well as the cost to run the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) at the town office.
Town officials ran the EOC around the clock for about three days.
Town officials submitted an application for the provincial government's Disaster Recovery Program in July.
