Town of Sundre officials are planning to claim an estimated $451,000 from the provincial government for overland flooding in town in June.
The majority of the cost is to cover damage that was caused to Greenwood Campground, as well as the cost to run the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) at the town office.
Town officials ran the EOC around the clock for about three days.
“So for setting up and running through the emergency,” explained Wanda Watson-Neufeld, the town's director of corporate services.
Town officials submitted an application for the provincial government's Disaster Recovery Program in July.
“We can start claiming at any time. We haven't claimed yet; we're planning to claim in the next two weeks,” she said. “And then it could take them who knows how long to get the money back.”
The province is providing disaster financial assistance for Albertans who suffered property damage caused by the June flood. The eligible dates of loss for property owners are from June 19 to June 25.
Government officials have been advising applicants to report the loss to their insurance companies, take pictures of the damage, track hours spent cleaning and to keep receipts for rentals.
Applications are still being accepted, as no deadline has been set.
