The Town of Sundre will provide financial support for the upcoming provincial hockey tournament being hosted in town.
Council voted to provide $3,000 from the community services unnamed reserves to the Sundre Minor Hockey Association (SMHA), during the meeting on Feb. 19.
SMHA president Dallas Rosevear requested the funds to cover ice time during the atom provincial hockey tournament in March.
Council members agreed to support the provincials at the Feb. 4 council meeting, but tabled the motion in order for administration to investigate where the funds would come from.
Coun. Paul Isaac said he disagreed with the motion that was passed at the Feb. 4 meeting, which he was absent from.
He said he supports the SMHA, but doesn't support this amount of money coming out of the Town of Sundre's pocket.
He said he was ìdisappointedî that town members weren't being ìcreativeî.
Municipal officials should work with SMHA to raise money for the provincials, rather than paying it from the Town of Sundre, he said.
He suggested shaving logos into the ice at the arena for the provincials, in order to raise the funds.
This idea was also discussed at the Feb. 4 meeting.
The reason council decided not to go through with this idea is because Jacci Hager, the town's manager of community services, said the arena would have to be closed for at least three days to undergo the process.
Isaac said other municipalities he talked to that had hosted similar tournaments before didn't pay anything.
Coun. Myron Thompson said although he made the motion at the Feb. 4 meeting, he wasn't sure if he made the right decision, after hearing what Isaac had to say.
Council discussed the fact that Rosevear is looking to businesses in town for sponsorship as well.
At the Feb. 4 meeting, Rosevear offered free tickets to town officials to attend the provincials, in return, if they did decide to financially support the tournament.
Other options for where to take the Town of Sundre's contribution from were also discussed at the Feb. 19 meeting.
One of the options was to add the $3,000 to the 2013 community services community event donations budget, which is to be brought forward to council during the spring budget adjustment.
The other option was to take the $3,000 from surplus.
Coun. Pat Toone made the motion to take the money from the community services unnamed reserves, and all council members were in favour.
Coun. Tony Jordan was absent from the meeting.
