The first Town of Sundre Storefront Improvement Program grant has been awarded to the owner of 206 Centre St. North for $2,500.

There are currently two tenants in the building -- Pro-Water Conditioning and D.A.D.S Ideal Cleaning Supplies.

According to Pro-Water Conditioning's Mike Crouch, who made the application on behalf of the building's owner, the money will be spent on installing new windows, a new paint job, and stonework to the front of the building.

The project has already started and officials plan to finish it before the snow falls.

Officials did not wish to release the total cost of the project, but said it is “a lot more than $2,500.”

As a business owner in the building for 14 years, he believes the improvements to the building will improve business.

“A more attractive building would draw more customer walk-ins,” said Crouch.

According to Jon Allan, the town's economic development officer, three other applications for the grant were received. However, two of them were ineligible and one applicant backed out for financial reasons.

Members of the town's corridor enhancement committee reviewed the applications earlier this month.

“The committee was impressed with the plan and is happy to reimburse, as a grant, 50 per cent of the cost of renovations up to a maximum of $2,500, to the building's owners when the work is complete,” said Allan.

The Storefront Improvement Program launched in January, but no applications were received until July. The May application deadline was extended to allow businesses more time to apply.

Council budgeted $10,000 to be spent on the program this year, and although only one grant was awarded, the committee is hoping to continue the program next year.

Eligible enhancements included in the program are facade upgrades like painting, windows, lighting, canopies, restorative brickwork, landscaping and signage.

By accepting Storefront Improvement Program funds, the applicant commits to maintaining all improvements and to keep storefronts as well as sides and backs of buildings clean and free of graffiti for a minimum of five years.
