A Sundre woman charged after a Calgary woman was attacked and severely injured by two pit bulls in a Sundre trailer park in August 2012 will go to trial next month, an Alberta Justice official said Friday.

Rita Phillip faces two counts of aggravated assault. Her trial will get underway in Calgary Court of Queen's Bench on May 26 and is scheduled to run until May 30.

Calgary resident Deanna Wolfe suffered severe injuries, including the loss of an ear, when she was attacked by two pit bull dogs in a trailer in the Sundre Mobile Estates park shortly after 2 a.m. on Aug. 18, 2012.

One of the dogs in question was shot and killed by a Sundre RCMP officer on the night of the attack, while the second dog was later euthanized.

Each of the charges Phillip faces carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison.

Wolfe has launched a $300,000 civil lawsuit against Phillip and the Town of Sundre.

The suit alleges, in part, that the Town of Sundre was negligent for failing to “ensure proper signage as stipulated by the bylaws, failing to destroy the pit bulls, failing to monitor the pit bulls once they were deemed dangerous.”
