The Olds branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will be hosting a veterans appreciation event on Sept. 23 and 24 to honour those who served during Canada's 10-year involvement in Afghanistan.
The event is part of recognition festivities taking place through legion branches across Canada to recognize the contributions Canada's soldiers made in Afghanistan.
“We just wanted to be part of this dominion recognition,” said Dave Clemens, chair of the organizing committee for branch 105.
At 5 p.m. on Saturday, Master Cpl. (retired) Paul Franklin will give a keynote address about his time in Afghanistan. Franklin helped found the Franklin-Northern Alberta Amputee Program after he lost both legs during his second tour in Afghanistan. The speech will form part of a formal dinner being hosted at the legion.
In addition to Franklin's address, other activities over the two days will include a meet-and-greet at the branch Friday to coincide with the regular meat draws and horse races. On Saturday, there will be a short remembrance ceremony at the cenotaph beginning at 10 a.m. to honour those who served in Afghanistan.
Other activities on Saturday will include automobile and motorcycle displays in the branch's east parking lot, in addition to displays inside the branch. A barbecue, with all proceeds going toward “Outward Bound” an organization dedicated to helping returning soldiers overcome emotional difficulties and re-adapt to civilian life, will also be held.
