Two local teenage boys are raising money for the Canadian Cancer Foundation and will be shaving their heads at the upcoming second annual Sundre's Got Talent show.
ìWe're cutting our hair to raise money for cancer funding and support,î said 16-year-old Luke Jackson.
He has kept his hair beyond shoulder length for as long as he can remember.
His friend Conner Bourgonje, 17, wants to support him by shaving his hair which hangs over his ears.
Jackson and Natalie Winters, organizer of the show, came up with the idea together.
ìLuke has had a lot of razzing for a long time to cut his hair. So I don't think he would do it for anything less than something really worthwhile,î said Winters.
ìI figured for cancer is a worthwhile cause,î said Jackson.
The goal is to raise a minimum of $5,000 and they are collecting cash donations up until the event. There will be a live auction at the show where people can donate as well.
ìWe were all just sitting around one day and they're like ëare you ever going to cut your hair?' and I'm like ëprobably not' and they're like ëwhat if you did it to raise money?'î said Jackson. ìThat's kind of how that happened.î
Another goal is to have others step up to shave their heads at the event as well.
ìLuke originally wasn't too confident about cutting his hair. So I thought ëhey, he's a buddy. I could raise some more money too. The more money the better right?'î said Bourgonje.
ìPlus we've both been affected by cancer personally, with family members.î
Winters is still looking for people to sign up for the show, which will be held the first weekend of February.
ìIt's mainly the youth groups in Sundre and area that come together to highlight and showcase our youth here,î said Winters.
ìSundre doesn't have a lot of outlets to kind of let kids shine. So we're trying to give them another opportunity to do that.î
To donate, go to the Canadian Cancer Society website and donate under Sundre's Got Talent. To sign up for the show, Winters can be reached directly at 403-638-3818.
