Although florists were busy putting together bouquets of roses last week, Valentine's Day is not the busiest time of the year for them, they say.
Kathy McMow at Forget Me Not Flowers said Mother's Day is the busiest time of year, with Valentine's Day ranking second.
ìBut we're extremely busy,î said McMow.
The manager at Sundre Flower Shoppe was too busy preparing for Valentine's Day to comment by press time.
Dianna Jenkins, front store manager at Sundre Community Drug Mart, said Valentine's Day is a busy time of year for the business as well.
ìWe're a little busier, but with Valentine's (Day) it's usually last minute,î said Jenkins.
ìOur chocolates sell well and our cards and your usual Valentine's Day stuff,î she said.
ìBut we're not like the flower store.î
Julie Wolfe, owner of Tranquility Day Spa, said Valentine's Day is not the busiest time of year for the business either, even though she promotes specials.
Sundown in Sundre, an annual December event, is actually the busiest day of the year, she said.
ìThe pot of gold hits that day,î she said.
ìAnd then that day onwards, after that, is obviously Christmastime ñ that's my busiest.î
Valentine's Day and Mother's Day are next on the list, bringing in about the same amount of sales.
ìWe get a lot more gift certificates than anything else that's sold on Valentine's (Day),î she said.
ìLast-minute stragglers, you know, who don't know what to get their wives, girlfriends, whatever. But over the nine years of being here it has not been one of the strongest setups.î
