Watch out for roaming grizzly

Acreage owners outside Sundre are being advised to take down any bird feeders they may have in their yards after area residents reported finding grizzly bear tracks in the snow over the weekend.

Acreage owners outside Sundre are being advised to take down any bird feeders they may have in their yards after area residents reported finding grizzly bear tracks in the snow over the weekend.

Mountain View BearSmart Society was notified Monday of the track sightings in the Osadchuk Heights subdivision just southeast of Sundre on Sunday.

Bearsmart chairman Paul Fraser said although most bears have now moved into dens for hibernation, there are still some wandering around the district.

As such, removing bird feeders and other food items such as garbage and dead livestock is a good precaution in keeping those bears away from properties. “It becomes an attractant,” Fraser told the Round Up.

Anyone spotting a bear in the Sundre area should call the Sundre Alberta Sustainable Resource Development office at 403-638-3805, or if after hours, the 24-hour toll-free Report A Poacher line at 1-800-642-3800, he said.

If the situation is a public safety emergency, call 9-1-1.
