SUNDRE – Several animals and birds were reportedly recently seized during a checkstop conducted by Fish and Wildlife officers in conjunction with numerous law enforcement agencies including local Mounties.
Sgt. Randy Poon, commander of the Sundre RCMP detachment, told the Albertan the operation was carried out on Saturday, Nov. 18 on Highway 584 and Range Road 60 just west of Sundre.
The summary was among a list of highlights of files members of the Sundre RCMP detachment were involved with over the period of time spanning Nov. 14-27.
The sergeant said the checkstop was a Fish and Wildlife initiative organized by the district office in Sundre to curb illegal hunting.
“They were the spearhead for that operation,” said Poon.
The other agencies involved were Environmental Enforcement Branch of Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, Alberta Sheriffs, Rocky Mountain House RCMP Traffic and Sundre RCMP.
Somewhere around 350 to 400 vehicles were stopped. As a result, the following enforcement actions took place: several animals and birds were seized; 11 Wildlife Act and Regulation violations; four Traffic Safety Act violations; two vehicle equipment violations; one Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Act violation; one immediate roadside sanction (IRS) caution; as well as one IRS failure, he said.
Deer collisions, B&E, traffic violations
On Wednesday, Nov. 15, police also responded to a reported breaking and entering at the Sundre Thrift Shop’s shed; however, nothing appears to have been taken and there as of Nov. 28 were no suspects or persons of interest identified, he said.
Additionally, with the sun setting earlier at this time of year, there were 11 reported collisions with deer in the Sundre area, with no motorists sustaining any injuries. Overall, including the 11 incidents with the deer, there were a total of 17 traffic collisions reported. The remaining collisions were reportedly the result of road conditions, and no charges have been laid in any of those incidents, he said.
During their patrols over the span of two weeks, officers issued 15 traffic violations as well as three non-moving related citations, he said, adding a further three moving as well as three non-moving traffic warnings were also issued.
Concluding his report, Poon said, 23 other police files related to thefts, mischief, and other investigations that did not result in charges or found to be non-criminal in nature, were completed.
