Once implemented, the vaccination rule would cover the federal civil service, travellers in federally regulated industries including airlines, trains, and cruise ships, as well as workers in those fields. The transport minister's office said the deadline for the rule change is the end of October.

"Early relaxation of public-health measures has left two crumbling health-care systems in their wake and the dire realities are now in full view," said Dr. Katharine Smart, president of the Canadian Medical Association.

“If we were to bring in widespread restrictions, [they] would most likely be complied with by people who are vaccinated, but we would likely see large scale non-compliance among the unvaccinated population. That wouldn’t necessarily get us much further ahead,” said the premier.

“There's more COVID cases in our community than we've seen since the beginning,” Paul McLauchlin, reeve of Ponoka County, said.
