The Innisfail Public Library received some new books and a visit from the Alberta Prairie Classroom On Wheels (COW) bus that was made possible by the Centre for Family Literacy, an organization out of Edmonton.
The COW bus made a quick stop at the Innisfail library on the afternoon of Sept. 6, to drop off 50 books of all different kinds and variations for the library's collection.
“It is a great thing for our library,” said Laurie Hodges Humble, library manager. “We are really glad to be a part of this and are very appreciative.”
The Classroom On Wheels has been in operation since 2003 and runs year round. Its mandate is to visit 70 communities every year, sharing ideas and resources while building awareness of family literacy across the province.
The interior of the bus is filled with toys and activities for children to play and learn with, while the exterior is adorned with eye-catching cow print.
Local organizations work together with the Centre for Family Literacy to co-ordinate a COW bus visit. Families with young children are invited to explore and enjoy the books and homemade activities that fill the bus. Trained facilitators welcome visitors to the bus and share ideas about early learning and literacy development with families and local literacy practitioners.
The Alberta Prairie Classroom On Wheels Project is funded by Alberta Enterprise and Advanced Education.
