The Spruce View School high school leadership class headed to the Healthy Active School Symposium Oct. 30 in Red Deer.
School health facilitator Jeanette Greenough says the event, which brings together a variety of different groups that promote well-being, is the perfect opportunity for students and staff to get the tools they need to make a comprehensive nutrition program a sustainable endeavour.
“I think we'll get lots of really great ideas,” she said. “It will empower leaders to create healthy school communities.”
Spruce View School created its Healthy Schools Healthy Future initiative with the help of a $10,000 University of Alberta grant.
“If we can get some things in place and find ways for the students to get involved it may just take on a life of its own,” she said of their program, which is still in its infancy. “Students need to buy into the fact that they need to take ownership of the project.”
The event, put on by Ever Active Schools, is a collaborative effort with Alberta Health Services, Be Fit For Life network, APPLE Schools and The Alberta Healthy School Communities Wellness Fund.
Healthy Schools program has received additional funding and smoothie supplies from the Christ Lutheran Craig Church.
Spruce View School will be supplying meat, cheese and other nutritious options to go along with sweets at Halloween festivities.
Familiarizing teachers with Daily Physical Activity kits and other resources is ongoing.
